The Farmers' Market Team attends the 2009 Green Fair Hosted by John Muir Health

As part of our partnership with John Muir Health and our commitment to promoting healthy, local food, CCCFM participated in the hospital's 2009 Green Fair on April 1 in Walnut Creek. Jessie, Keith, Sophie and Lauren manned a colorful display table full of fresh market produce, brochures and magazines about our markets and the East Bay local food scene, including the new pamphlet featuring 10 Reasons to Shop at Your Local Farmers' Market. The hospital employees loved the fresh, juicy "clementines" they were treated to and walked out with our handsome black shopping bags that created such a buzz... we ran out! We hope to see them all again at the markets this summer!

The next John Muir Health Green Fair will be at the Concord campus on April 30.

CCCFM sponsors cooking class at Mangini Farm Agriculture museum

Chef, Jay Holecek recently sourced freshly picked vegetables from the Walnut Creek Farmers market for his cooking demo he did for students who were visiting the Mangini Farm Agriculture Museum in Antioch. The UC extension and the museum have a great program, where kids are able to churn butter, grind wheat, and learn about healthy food, gardening, composting and the history of the area.

Chef Jay says "The food demo went well! I made three dishes and had the students try them all. Plus they got to handle and inspect the different kinds of cabbage. Some didn't believe they were real, but I had to assure them it was so real they could eat it! I even brought some of my sauerkraut for them to try. It was some of my strongest smelling kraut, and some actually liked it! An interesting byproduct occurred while teaching the kids, we were actually teaching the chaperons/parents also. Each student was given a packet that included recipes and information about the farmers market. Thanks again CCCFM for making it happen."
